Geiser Grand Hotel
by Ann Terry Hill
You’d think you were in the 19th century when you arrive at Baker City’s restored GEISER GRAND HOTEL. Along the Oregon Trail, this hotel’s heyday was in the 1890s and early 1900s when miners, timber and cattle barons made it their home. It has experienced a rebirth since Barbara and Dwight Sidway purchased it in 1993, restored it, and reopened it in 1998. Minor changes like electric lights replace candles, but other than that, the restoration has been complete and true to the 19th Century Grand Dame it was. Winter time is spectacular—snow makes everything more magical.
THIS YEAR THE GEISER GRAND IS OFFERING A 2 NIGHT SNOW SHOE PACKAGE FOR TWO-mid-week, good until May 15. Register now at the right for a chance to win, drawing to be held March 1. Package includes a deluxe room for 2, snow shoe rental, and lunch while trekking the wide open spaces. Package value approximately $400.
SUNSET MAGAZINE says “there is no finer hotel between Salt Lake City and Seattle.” It is true to its original form including the restored glass ceiling in the dining room where the Sidway’s imported 200 year old glass from Poland and Germany to make it as near the original as possible . The rich heritage of architecture carries over to the food served in the dining room, mainly Northwestern cuisine. Crystal chandeliers, mahogany columns only add to the grandeur. No expense has been spared in making the hotel historically correct. You’ll feel as though you were in a movie.
I’ve had the pleasure of staying here several times and each time is an adventure. The Geiser Grand is truly my most favorite place to stay.
Stay tuned for more of Geiser Grand’s exciting events this Spring and Summer.
